The Battle of Manassas (Bull Run) - July 21, 1861
The first battle of the war is a victory for the South! The Union army led by Brigadier General Irvin McDowell charged south to the waiting Confederate forces at Matthews Hill. It was a decisive victory for the south with an estimated 2,950 casualties and 1,750 casualties for the Confederates. Thomas Jefferson held the Union armies all night earning the name 'Stonewall' Jackson and shattered the Union's forces. They then had to recede back to Washington. This southern victory has shown the Yanks we're not afraid and we can hold our own. This isn't going to be quite the picnic they were expecting.
